Understanding a basic dieline does not require you to differentiate every line by name. What a dieline includes might seem confusing at first. It can include outlines for cuts, dashed lines for folds, bleed areas, panel boundaries, flaps, and a small glue strip, all in one graphic. Rather than memorizing the entire dieline, it is better to think of the dieline as a diagram of what is to be cut, what is to be left intact, and where the carton board will need to bend.
The lines that are meant to be cut are the lines that you would remove in the die-cutting process. These lines outline the blank when it is removed from the web or the sheet. They may also include inner cutouts. Creases are lines where you would want the paperboard to fold. It is important to distinguish between a cut and a crease. A cut is something that separates one piece of the blank from another, while a crease is simply a place where the board is scored so that it can be folded. By going over the lines with a pen or pencil, you can easily differentiate between a cut line and a crease line.
Once you have identified where the cuts and creases are, you should be able to identify the panels and flaps of the carton. Panels are typically the main rectangular surfaces, such as the front, back, or sides. Flaps are often smaller rectangles, which may fold in to become top flaps, bottom flaps, dust flaps, or closure flaps. The glue strip is typically a small area used to secure one part of the blank to another during assembly. You would not confuse this area with the printed content area, or the area where the main label would go. To help visualize how a cut translates to a crease, you can take apart a box and see where the pieces connect. Once you see where the pieces are connected, you will know where to place the glue strip on the dieline.
Another important area is the bleed. Bleed is usually part of the design, rather than part of the structural elements of the carton. When artwork goes outside the cut line, this extra area is considered the bleed. Bleed allows for some leeway in printing, so you don’t get a white border on the edge of the product. The safe area, or the area where you want the art or copy to be, is typically farther in from the edges. When looking at a dieline, you should look at the structural lines first and the bleed and safe area later. Trying to look at all the areas at once makes a simple dieline much more complex than it needs to be.
To test yourself, you can print out a sample of a dieline and write down what each part means. Start by finding the cut line, then the crease line, then the glue strip. Then, label each panel and flap, and finally, find the bleed area and the safe area. Once you have labeled all the areas on the blank, fold it up along the crease lines and secure it together with tape. Try to match the folded blank to the structure of the carton. Does each side fit properly? Is there a flap that disappears when the carton is put together? If you run into issues, go back to your flat dieline and check the areas you marked.
Lastly, you should consider how the material behaves. Creasing is the process of scoring paperboard so that it can be folded. Sometimes, if the crease is too shallow or the stock is too thick, the carton will crack or not fold properly. It is important to keep these structural considerations in mind when reading a dieline. The dieline tells you where you want the paperboard to fold, but you have to consider the material properties.
Finally, test your understanding of the dieline. Point to a part of the dieline and describe what happens to the blank in that area. Can you tell me which part of the dieline will become the bottom panel? How would you make sure there is enough room for the glue strip? Once you can explain the dieline in relation to a finished carton, you will no longer need to memorize the terms used for each element. Instead, you will understand what each part of the dieline is for.
